Lemon Pickle

Homemade Pickles are the best. I always prefer them because they are fresh with less sodium and other preservatives. Lemon pickle is one of the easiest pickle to make at home. If you have a bag of lemons lying around in your pantry you can pickle them and store it in the refrigerator or gift it to your friends. It saves you a lot of money as well. Here is a simple recipe for making tasty lemon pickles. You can serve them with rice or roti. I love to pair them with curd or yogurt rice. It is perfect for this hot weather.


  • Big lemons – 5
  • Salt – 3 tsp
  • Dried red chilies – 4
  • Fenugreek seeds (methi) – 1/2 tsp
  • Turmeric powder – 1/2 tsp
  • A small piece of asafoetida
  • Sesame oil – 2/3 cup

Method of Preparation:

Heat 1/2 tsp of oil and roast chilies and fenugreek seeds. Allow it to cool and grind it to a fine powder. Mix it with turmeric powder.

Wash and clean the lemons. Remove the seeds and cut them into small pieces.

Mix salt and lemon pieces in a small bowl (preferably glass or ceramic jars). Let it rest for 2 to 3 days mixing with a wooden spoon for every 24 hours.

Liquid is settled at the bottom. So mix well and add the required amount of ground chili powder and mix again. Heat half of the sesame oil, let it cool and add it to the lemon.

Next day transfer the contents to a pickle jar (ceramic or glass). Fresh homemade pickle is ready.
