Radish Sambar

I am always interested in trying new things. I tried cooking sambar a little differently and it came out yummy. Hope you like this too…

Ingredients:

  • Red gram (Toor dal) - 3/4 cup
  • Chopped onion - 1 cup
  • Tomato - 1/2 (cut into small pieces)
  • Radish - 1/2 cup (sliced)
  • Curry leaves - a few
  • Coriander leaves - a few
  • Sambar powder - 2 1/2 tsp
  • Turmeric powder - 1/2 tsp
  • Oil - 2 tsp
  • Mustard seeds - 1 tsp
  • Garlic - 2
  • Salt to taste
  • Tamarind water - 1 cup ( 1tsp of tamarind paste in water)

Method of preparation:

  1. Rinse the red gram thoroughly and keep it in a container.
  2. Add 3 cups of water and turmeric powder and allow it to boil at high heat.
  3. Reduce to medium heat and cook till they becomes soft (around 20 minutes).
  4. In the mean time, heat oil in a pan and add the sliced radish and fry till the raw smell goes off (4-5 minutes)
  5. Once the red gram is cooked, mash them by stirring and add onions, followed by sambhar powder, fried radish, tomato, curry leaves and salt and cook until the vegetables becomes tender.
  6. Now add tamarind water, combine well and cook for 3 minutes.
  7. Remove from heat and season with mustard seeds and minced garlic.
  8. Garnish with coriander leaves.

:-) Serve hot with steamed rice and veg curry/papad.

***Radish can be replaced by other vegetables like, bell pepper, cauliflower, potatoes, etc.
